A poem inspired by Gord Downie

Poem
“Ballin on the court”

As i watch the players walk on the court,
They go to dribble the ball,
Running from end to end,
Praying not to be embarrassed and fall.

Eyes of other players,
As they are saying their last prayers,
To keep dribbling more,
And to throw the ball and score.

Getting nervous around the coaches,
As he walks towards the team,
To achieve the players dreams.

A player runs to his right,
Another to the left,
The ball hitting the backboard for a flight,
The ball is shot too short,
Reaching the other court.

Dribble, pass and shoot,
Hands up to block the opponent,
Is this your true moment.

Determination, teamwork and perseverance,
Don't develop overnight,
As you get ready for your reappearance.

Show them what you got,
Make them read a report,
Ballin on the court.

This poem is inspired by the lead singer Gord Downie. His songs and poems inspire people around the world to be themselves and to show who they are. Even as Gord Downie has had troubles over the past months he still brings joy to many fans across the world. Gord Downie inspired many people and this includes myself.

I am a leader

I am a leader because…..

Being a leader? What does it mean? Being the boss of someone? Being over controlled? I believe being a leader is someone that has the voice to say to the peers or individually, what needs to happen. They need to conduct what goes around and how to move forward. Leaders can be found all over the world but not all leaders believe in good cause. Let's take Hitler for example and compare him to Martin Luther King Jr. Hitler was an excellent leader, however he used his power in an unsophisticated way. Martin Luther King was also an excellent leader and used it to change how people think of each other by race. That right there is two examples of where leaders are found and how they can be.

Leadership, the quality or ability to lead is an important skill needed in today’s society. Without leaders in our world, we would get nowhere. I think leaders are people that naturally lead the group and aren’t afraid or worried of others thinkings.

Throughout my life I’ve had many experiences and time where i encountered leadership. I’ve encountered the role of a democratic leader by playing on a basketball team with younger players, and participating in group assignments for school. I’ve also gained or strengthened leadership qualities and traits like listening, being patient or not being afraid of criticism. Although all these traits have been gained, I’m still on the development of others. These include, being more discipline, and a better speaker towards groups.

Playing basketball for long years gave me the chance to lose games and win. This helps me have a different look at things. I now realize that if you lose, it’s not a reason to give up, because “the moment you give up, is the moment you let someone else win”. This gains the knowledge on what to improve for next time and how to fix your mistakes for the better of the group. When kids and even adults don't succeed they put keywords into their brain “I can’t do it”. But by listening to my peers and their mistakes, it helped me overcome the obstacles in my way to finish towards my goal. From here, i have become a democratic leader.

In group projects i encourage others to speak up and say what's on their mind because sometimes they are too shy to raise their hand or confront someone. Not only does it help them, it helps the group to move forward with better ideas and different minds. This shows my charismatic leadership. I would get everyone’s skype info or number so we can interact with one another and share ideas and to speak up.

Teach the World

I would want to teach the world about believing in yourself. That may sound lame right now but most of us in our lives from a young age start doubting what we can or cannot do. Others may have a nice self esteem and believe they can conquer the world if they’d like. When I was at a young age starting to play basketball, I never believed in myself, I’d put myself down over being confident and saying I can. This problem grew on me, started to get worse and worse eventually I had to see psychologist. Ever since then I started to gain my confidence more and more. Your mind is everything; whatever you say in your head will function. If you're shooting a basketball and say “I hope I don’t miss”, that will increase the chance of you missing because you are telling yourself what to do. You could say, “I’m going to make this shot”, with that attitude, the chances of succeeding are very high. Being courageous is a pain part of this process, being outside of your comfort zone. You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.I feel like if people who don’t believe in themselves actually started to believe in themselves then they would get the jobs they hoped for, their life would be completely different because they will achieve more then they are thinking right now. That is why I want to teach that you can believe in yourself because it will show you the real person you were meant to be.Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you think is great work, and the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking and don’t settle. Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. By work I’m not just talking about a job or a profession, work can be a game, school, anything that you put your mind into.
